When a buyer asks ChatGPT “what’s the best protein bar without added sugar in India?” or asks Perplexity to compare payroll tools, the answer names a handful of brands. AI visibility is whether yours is one of them, and whether what the assistant says about you is right.
For PR and communications teams, this is quickly becoming as important as search rankings were a decade ago.
Why it matters now
AI answers are no longer a niche. Google shows AI Overviews above its search results in India and has rolled out AI Mode here too, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity are used every day for research and buying decisions. Often the buyer reads the AI’s summary and never clicks a link.
If AI doesn’t name you, many buyers never reach the search results where you rank.
That shifts the question from “do we rank on page one?” to “what does the AI say when someone asks about our category?”
Why it’s a PR job, not just an SEO job
AI assistants form their view of a brand from what has been published about it: news coverage, trade press, round-up articles, reviews, forums such as Reddit and Quora, and reference sites. Some assistants also search the web live and cite their sources.
That is earned media. The sources AI trusts are largely the same sources PR teams have always worked with. A brand that is consistently and accurately covered by credible publications is far more likely to be named, and described correctly.
Key takeaway
AI visibility is earned the way reputation is earned: through what credible sources say about you.
The four things to check
- Are you named? When buyers ask category questions, does the assistant mention you at all?
- Is it accurate? Are the facts right, or out of date: old pricing, old leadership, discontinued products?
- Who is named instead? Which competitors appear in the answers you are missing from?
- Which sources does it rely on? Which publications and sites shape the answer?
A real example
We asked Claude what it knows about the Indian food brand The Whole Truth, using the same question as our free snapshot. Its description of the brand’s positioning, founder and founding year was accurate. But it didn’t mention the brand’s protein powders, now a major product line, or its co-founder, and it did not know about its growth: ₹216 crore revenue in FY25 and a $51 million Series D in February 2026.
Nothing in the answer was harmful. It was simply about 18 months behind the brand. That gap is exactly what PR can close. The full example, with every line checked, is in our sample AI snapshot.
How to measure AI visibility
- List 20 to 40 questions your buyers really ask, from “best … for …” to “is … safe?”
- Ask each question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity
- Record whether the brand is named, in what position, and which competitors appear
- Note which sources each assistant cites
- Repeat quarterly and track the change
The headline number is the share of questions where the brand is named, compared with competitors. We explain how assistants choose brands in how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity decide which brands to recommend, and what to do about it in how to get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT answers.
